About Weser Uplands Nature Reserve

The Weser Uplands Nature Reserve (Naturpark Weserbergland) spans parts of the German federal states of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) and North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen). This protected area features a diverse terrain of gently rolling hills, ancient beech and oak forests, broad river valleys, and traditional villages that together create an iconic Central European upland landscape. The reserve encompasses the Weser River corridor and adjacent mountain ranges like the Solling, the Kaufungen Forest, and the Schaumburg Forest, offering a mosaic of habitats that support rich biodiversity, including deer, foxes, many bird species, and rare plants. Historically, the region is dotted with medieval castles, timber-framed towns, and remnants of old trade routes, weaving culture into the natural setting. Outdoor enthusiasts will find miles of well-maintained hiking and cycling trails, including segments of the renowned Weser Cycle Route and the European long-distance trail E1. Opportunities for climbing, paddling on the Weser River, and nature photography abound. The nature reserve's gentle terrain and scenic vistas make it ideal for families and solitude seekers alike.
